Biography
Mr Sofronoff obtained Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees from the University of Queensland.

In 1977, Mr Sofronoff was admitted as a barrister and in 1988 was appointed Queen’s Counsel. Subsequently, he was President of the Bar Association of Queensland Committee (1994-1996), a member of the Queensland Incorporated Council of Law Reporting (1999-2004), President of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Tribunal (2001-2005), member of the Royal Australian Navy
Reserve (2003-2014), member of the University of Queensland Law School Advisory Board (2014-2017) and adjunct professor of law at the University of Queensland.

From 2005 to 2014 Mr Sofronoff served as the Solicitor-General for Queensland. In 2015 he was appointed Commissioner of the Grantham Floods Commission of Inquiry and in 2016 he led a review of the parole system in Queensland.

As a barrister, Mr Sofronoff had a broad practice which included commercial disputes, criminal law, constitutional law and public law.

In 2017, Mr Sofronoff was appointed President of the Queensland Court of Appeal.
After his retirement as a judge in 2022, Mr Sofronoff led the Commission of Inquiry into Forensic DNA Testing in Queensland. He is now leading the Board of Inquiry into the Criminal Justice System for the ACT Government.

Mr Sofronoff is Co-Chair of the Forensic Science Queensland interim Advisory Board, a judge of the Court of Appeal of the Fédération Internationale de l’Autombile and Chair of the Supercars Court of Appeal in Australia. He is also a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia.
