Michael Coper Roundtable:

Presentation on Genocide and the International Court of Justice

Place:              The High Court of Australia, Parkes, Canberra

    All AAL Fellows who are in Canberra on 23 April 2024 are invited to a Michael Coper Roundtable that evening to be presented by Professor Donald Rothwell FAAL.  Professor Rothwell will discuss three cases that presently running in the International Court of Justice:

    1. Ukraine v. Russian Federation, dealing with Russia’s allegation that genocide was taking place in Ukraine;
    2. South Africa v. Israel, alleging that Israel is committing acts of genocide against Palestinian peoples in Gaza; and
    3. Nicaragua v Germany, alleging that Germany is supporting acts of genocide by supplying Israel with military assistance and suspending aid.

     The event will be chaired by Emeritus Professor Stephen Bottomley FAAL.


    Professor Donald Rothwell FAAL is one of Australia’s leading and widely published international law experts.  Amongst a broad range of international law topics on which he has written and commented, his particular interest lies with the law of the sea, on which he is co-author of the textThe International Law of the Sea and author of Islands and International Law.  He has acted as a consultant or been a member of expert groups for UNEP, UNDP, IUCN, the Australian Government, and from 2012-2018 he was Rapporteur of the International Law Association Committee on Baselines under the International Law of the Sea’.
