The Annual Spigelman Oration was given on 12 November 2020 by the Hon Alan Robertson SC under the auspices of the Public Law Section of the New South Wales Bar Association.
The title of the talk was ‘Supervising the legal boundaries of executive powers’.
Academy Fellow the Hon Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC was one of three Commissioners appointed to the Commission which was established on 20 February 2020 in response to the extreme bushfire season of 2019-20 which resulted in loss of life, property and wildlife and environmental destruction. It drew information from a variety of sources, including public submissions and hearings informing the Commission’s report and recommendations for mitigating and responding to, future natural disasters.
Dr Bennett has a PhD in cell biology from the University of Sydney and a bachelor of laws from the University of New South Wales. Among many roles, Dr Bennett was a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 2003 to 2016.
The deputy president of the Academy of Law, the Hon Kevin Lindgren AM QC FAAL, has given the keynote address to a seminar marking the 40th year of the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, on 26 October 2020. The ‘CISG’ has been adopted by 94 countries and is the default law of contract for international sales.
The online seminar was held by the UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for Australia (UNCCA) and the Commercial Law Association CLA). It included internationally renowned experts on the CISG, along with a a host of other speakers, and on line presentations covering the full range of activities of UNCCA in its work with UNCITRAL working groups.
